The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS-(X)) will be a fast, modular, multi-purpose corvette, optimised for littoral warfare. Prime missions are Anti-surface warfare (ASuW) against hostile small boats, Mine Counter Measures (MCM) and Littoral Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW).

Several teams have submitted proposals:

  • General Dynamic Bath Iron Works: advanced Trimaran
  • Lockheed Martin with Gibbs & Cox, Bollinger Shipyards and Marinette Marine: Sea Blade Advanced Semi-Planing Seaframe monohull
  • Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems and John J. McMullen Associates Inc.: based on norvegian Skjold class Surface Effect Ship (SES)
  • Northrop Grumman with Kockums AB and Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft AG: Upgraded swedish Visby class monohull
  • Textron: Hybrid Catamaran Air Cushion (HCAC) Surface Effect Ship (SES)

In July 2003, development contracts were awarded to Lockheed Martin's semi-planning monohull, Raytheon's Skjold-based SES, and General Dynamics' trimaran. In May 2004, Bath and Lockheed were awarded contracts for final system design with options for detail design and construction of each two Flight 0 Littoral Combat Ships.
